Assertions of Somatic Movement Education
We understand “Balance” as a verb not a noun
We see “Posture” as a direction or quality not a position
We re-define “Health” as movement through cycles of change and growth, not a static achievement
We believe that sustaining body functioning is handled through unconscious patterning, and this can be consciously explored, investigated, challenged, and updated
We notice that movement at all scale levels is easier in an expanded structure, that the body and mind work better when they are open and free
We cultivate the “middle way” as a philosophical stance, a lifestyle, a therapeutic container
We notice how just the right amount of floating in the sweet center is deeply nourishing. We also understand the need to play at the edges, awaken aliveness, and challenge habituated restrictions in order to develop new, more functional patterns of living and moving.
We balance security and challenge, lulling and awakening, stability and mobility, feeling more at home and moving out into the world.
We seek the feeling of “just right” in movement and touch, not too big or too small, not too fast or too slow, not too light or too firm in contact.
We define what we are doing as a holistic/non-allopathic approach to somatic movement therapy supported by new research and new paradigms of understanding this wonderful body we live in. We understand that this work has its own simple, clear, and potent language and intentions that resists being dissected or discussed in allopathic terms.
We reframe unconscious speech by saying or thinking what we really are doing as we work. This can be its own practice.
a. Not “trying” but “exploring” or “discovering”
b. Not “fixing” but “unfixing what’s stuck to allow the body itself to restructure patterns of moving”
c. Other reframing you can think of?
